Ireland Golf. Information from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board: Northern Ireland is a small country, but it’s a big player in the world of golf. Not only do we have world class professional golfers in Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell, this northern region of Ireland has the two top-ranked golf courses in Ireland, Royal Co Down and Royal Portrush. Our links courses attract world attention and have played host to some of the top tournaments, both at professional and amateur level. This has brought television coverage putting Northern Ireland on the international golf map and raising the profile of the NI golf product. As a golfing destination, Northern Ireland won the ‘Best Established Golf Destination’ award in 2001 from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, an accolade acknowledging the quality, service and facilities of golf in Northern Ireland.

The NI golf product is an established one, comprising of approximately 71% private member clubs, 5% municipal clubs and the more recent development of propriety clubs, approximately 24%, with future golf developments in the pipeline. With a variety of links, parkland, seaside and heath land courses to offer the tourist golfer at reasonable green fees, it is a product suitable for all markets. More access routes opening up in conjunction with low-cost airlines all contribute to offering an attractive golf package that can compete on the international market. The fact of the Ryder Cup being hosted in Ireland next year at the K Club, Co Kildare will undoubtedly bring marketing opportunities for the NI golf industry. The Tourist Board is currently in negotiation with Fáilte Ireland and the Professional Golf Association to maximise this opportunity in the run-up to the prestigious event. Any agreed outcomes will be communicated to the industry for information and collaboration.

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board has commissioned consultants to develop the Action Plan for the Activities Tourism Winning Theme. The aim of the Action Plan is to provide a framework of the necessary actions that will build and capitalise upon the Activities Tourism sector. Golf is a major product within this sector and a Golf Action Plan will be one of the outputs from this process. The information contained in the next few pages is a guide and reference document providing background to the NI golf product, market intelligence, golf tourism to N. Ireland and various marketing opportunities open to the trade and industry. Like any website it is a work-in-progress, requiring constant updates and improvements. Data is provided where available, but gaps do exist requiring either further dedicated research or survey work to complete.
